The exhibition "Corpi Celesti – A Selection from the Alinari Archives", within the international photography festival CORTONA ON THE MOVE
Fondazione Alinari is glad to announce, within the international photography festival CORTONA ON THE MOVE, the exhibition "Corpi Celesti – A Selection from the Alinari Archives", curated by Nicola Lagioia and Chiara Tagliaferri, in collaboration with Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia. Iconographic research by Rita Scartoni.
The aim is to explore the Alinari archive with reference to the theme Body of Evidence by means of an unconventional approach: not through the eyes of archivists, historians, specialists, or researchers, but by letting ourselves be captivated by the wondrous gaze of two wordsmiths, Nicola Lagioia and Chiara Tagliaferri.
Partners in life, and in this case also in their work, Lagioia and Tagliaferri initiate a three-way dialogue between themselves and a living archive that responds with unexpected surprises, dazzling hidden gems and unforgettable classics. Text and image come together in this exhibition, which reminds us, once again, how looking, and thus seeing, is a voluntary act that involves a choice and is never neutral.
The exhibition is being held at Fortezza del Girifalco, Cortona, from July 12 to November 3, 2024.
Friday, July 12, 8 P.M - Opening.
Saturday. July 13:
- 12:00 P.M. - guided tour with Veronica Nicolardi (Director Cortona On The Move), Nicola Lagioia, Chiara Tagliaferri and Rita Scartoni.
- 3 P.M. - talk on the exhibition at Teatro Signorelli. Speakers: Nicola Lagioia, Chiara Tagliaferri and Giorgio van Straten (President, FAF Toscana). Introduced by Veronica Nicolardi (Director, Cortona On The Move).
A selection of photos from the Alinari Archives was used for another exhibition at Cortona On The Move: "This Is the End", curated by Paolo Woods and Irene Opezzo.
Since it was invented, photography has been used as a proof, and in some cases, as a proof of death. In some of the “carte visite” from the Alinari archives the corpses of Italian bandits captured and killed by the authorities are arranged in a way to be at the same time recognizable and defeated. At times the capturers appear in the image alongside the victim in poses that recall trophy hunters with their kills.
Death has never been more alive than iat the Body of Evidence edition of COTM 2024.
