On Friday, October 6, 2023, the exhibition "Così lontani, così vicini. Il fascino dell'esotismo negli interni europei tra '800 e '900" will open at the Stibbert Museum in Florence.
On Friday, October 6, 2023, the exhibition COSI’ LONTANI, COSI’ VICINI. IL FASCINO DELL’ESOTISMO NEGLI INTERNI EUROPEI TRA ‘800 e ‘900 ( SO FAR, SO NEAR. THE FASCINATION OF EXOTICISM IN EUROPEAN INTERIORS BETWEEN THE 1800s AND 1900s) opens to the public, at the Stibbert Museum in Florence, curated by Sabine du Crest and Enrico Colle.
The exhibition, organized and set up in collaboration with Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia, was conceived by Sabine du Crest.
Through a substantial group of photographs and a selection of Oriental art objects collected by Frederick Stibbert, the exhibition illustrates the fascination for exoticism in European interiors from the second half of the 19th century to the present day.
Some images, shot by great photographers, show us never seen glimpses of the interiors inhabited by artists, writers, diplomats and dandies. The photographs from the Alinari Archives display the Italian version of these interiors, with a focus on the Florentine ones, because Florence, throughout European history, has always played a special role in the relationship with other cultures.
The exhibition was made possible thanks to the collaboration with institutions like Université Bordeaux Montaigne, New York University Villa La Pietra, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies Villa I Tatti and Institut Français of Florence, and the support of Enrico Frascione and Maxence Hulin, Cécile Meilhac Durand-Ruel and l’Agence photographique La Collection.
"Così lontani, così vicini" will be open until May 5, 2024.
