news | NUOVA GENERAZIONE: exhibition opening at MAD
The exhibition "Nuova Generazione. Sguardi contemporanei sugli Archivi Alinari" opens to the public on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at MAD Murate Art District in Florence.
From November 21, 2024 to January 25, 2025 the exhibition ‘Nuova Generazione. Sguardi contemporanei sugli Archivi Alinari’ ('New Generation. Contemporary looks at the Alinari Archives') opens at MAD Murate Art District (Piazza delle Murate, Florence). The exhibition is curated by Giangavino Pazzola and Monica Poggi, with works by Matteo de Mayda (Treviso, 1984), Leonardo Magrelli (Rome, 1989), Giovanna Petrocchi (Rome, 1988) and Silvia Rosi (Scandiano, 1992).
The exhibition is the result of a commissioning and production project promoted by CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia and Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia, to enrich the Alinari Archives with original works by young artists. The initiative is promoted by the Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea of the Italian Ministry of Culture and by the Municipality of Florence and won the Strategia Fotografia 2022 call for bids to support research on contemporary languages, artistic production and Italian photographic excellence.
With the contribution of Fondazione CR Firenze.
After an initial presentation last autumn at CAMERA in Turin, MAD proposes an articulated exhibition that analyses the processuality of the photographers' work which, after the exhibition, will become part of the prestigious Fondazione Alinari collections. The layout narrates the genesis and development of the works through environmental installations in four different spaces. The path is articulated on the two floors of the MAD civic centre for contemporary art and offers a reflection on the creative process that led to the realisation of the projects.
The collaboration with this cultural and residency centre directed by Valentina Gensini and managed by MUS.E, dedicated to artistic research and open to various contemporary disciplines, with a particular focus on public commissions and photography, was a natural choice for the curators.
Admission to the exhibition is free.
Nuova Generazione marks an important moment in the history of the Fondazione Alinari, which for the first time participates in a commissioning project underlining the vitality of an archive born in Florence in the 19th century, but still capable of generating meaning through the dialogue with the contemporary world and through the collaboration with institutions such as CAMERA and MAD, points of reference for photographic research and artistic production.
Starting from the study of Alinari's extraordinary photographic heritage, each author has developed a new project that creates a dialogue between past and present, employing a multidisciplinary approach that bears witness to the richness of historical collections and the ways in which contemporary practices reflect on photography as a document.
The four projects on show explore a broad spectrum of reflections on the archive: the relationship between truth and fiction, the nature of the document, the decolonisation and deconstruction of imagery and knowledge.
The initiative is accompanied by a publication by Dario Cimorelli Editore, with reproductions of all the works on display, and essays by the project curators.
