Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia announces the opening of the exhibition ‘AL COMUNALE! From the Vittorio Emanuele II Politeama theatre to the Maggio Theatre’, at the Foyer of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, from October 17th, 2024, to December 22nd, 2024 (during the opening hours of the Theatre in conjunction with the scheduled performances).
Curated by Rita Scartoni with the collaboration of Manuel Rossi.
The exhibition is the result of the collaboration between ADSI Toscana, Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia and Fondazione Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and is part of the activities linked to Carte in dimora - Archivi.doc, under the patronage of the Tuscany Region.
There is a place that the Florentines have always identified as the space dedicated to opera and, at least since 1933, they have always called it that: Comunale (Municipal Theatre). And it still ends up that this is the name many also use for the new opera house: because what counts is not the space itself, but its content, what it represents.
This exhibition recounts the history and transformations of the Teatro Comunale through 31 photographs selected from the Alinari Archives and the historical archive of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. It's the architecture that takes centre stage in a photographic journey that starts in 1865 (with a rare image of the Politeama) and arrives in 2011. Stairways, stage machinery, roofs, stagings, demolitions, reconstructions, maquettes, are the narrating subjects of this long history.
In the theatre foyer, spectators will be able to follow the photographic itinerary that starts with suggestions and assonances and moves on to a narrative register, concluding with an exhibition of the Comunale maquettes from the 1930s.
